Kenya establishes over 100 relief camps amid catastrophic floods

Date: May 4, 2024

In response to the catastrophic floods sweeping through the nation, the Kenyan government has announced the establishment of over 100 relief camps, providing refuge to more than 27 500 displaced individuals.

Official figures reveal the staggering impact of the disaster, with over 190 000 citizens affected and a death toll of 210.

Amidst escalating calls for action, President William Ruto is poised to address the country, with many urging him to declare the floods a national disaster.

In a preemptive safety measure, residents in the vicinity of 178 dams and reservoirs, now at critical capacity, were ordered to evacuate within a day.

Concurrently, a mandatory evacuation notice was issued to those residing within 30 meters of the Nairobi River system and other water bodies, signalling the severity of the situation.

Interior Minister Kithure Kindiki confirmed that enforced evacuations are underway in the capital, as the government mobilises to provide logistical aid, temporary housing, and vital supplies to the communities ravaged by the floods.
